Theme Experiments let you compare two Shopify themes (Original vs Variant) without publishing changes. If you only plan to run URL Tests, you can skip this and run experiments on any two URLs instead. See Supported Tests.
Step 1: Start the Shopify install flow (two options)¶
You can begin Shopify installation from either place in the product:
- Go to Settings
- Click Install Shopify App
- You’ll be taken to Shopify to install Squoosh for your store
- Go to Experiments and create a new experiment
- In either the Original or Variant card, click Select Shopify Theme
- Click Install Shopify App
- You’ll be taken to Shopify to install Squoosh for your store
Need help installing?
Make sure you’re signed into a Shopify account with permission to install and manage apps for the store.
Step 2: Install the app in Shopify¶
In Shopify:
- Click Add app
- Select the store you want to enable theme experiments for
- Review permissions and click Install app
Shopify will ask you to approve the permissions Squoosh needs to read theme metadata and generate preview URLs for experiments.
For details on how your data is handled, see our Privacy Policy.
Step 3: Return to Squoosh and select themes in Experiments¶
After installing, return to Squoosh and go to Experiments.
- Create a new experiment (or open an existing draft)
- Click Select Shopify Theme on Original and choose your live theme
- Click Select Shopify Theme on Variant and choose the modified theme you want to test
Original vs Variant
- Original: your live theme
- Variant: a duplicated theme that contains the changes you want to test
Troubleshooting¶
- No themes appear: Confirm the app is installed on the correct Shopify store, then retry theme selection. If you have multiple stores, ensure you authorized the right one.
- Can’t install the app: Ask a store admin to install it, or grant your Shopify user the required permissions.
